SCHIZO SONICS
A WAR OF DECIBELS
Escalating Delusions of the Architecture and Topology of Sound
Schizo Sonics/A War of Decibels is an interdisciplinary installation and audio essay by Berlin based artist Nik Nowak. The installation refers to acoustic proxy wars that were conducted in the context of the (first) Cold War and continue to evolve in new forms today.
The 43-minute audio piece delves into the sound of an ideological divide: Across four episodes, narrative elements and historical original sounds intertwine—including those from the so-called Loudspeaker War, which was waged with acoustic means from 1961
to 1965 at the German-German border.
The overall used typeface is my very own designed FF Sizmo especially extended with a new typewriter style.
For quotes and to highlight certain text elements I had designed a new and special typeface. This solid and loud font is to be released soon.
A 20 pages long typographic interpretation of the performance captures its langues and visualizes the accustic elements and music snippets.
I am most greatful for Nik Nowak’s trust in me. It is a great ongoing collaboration.
