One of the two antipoles for the experiment to combine completely diffent shapes in a harmonic typeface got inspired by the beautiful handwriting, I found in an antique book about fleas by Francisci Redi, 1686.
The other inspiration came from the grotesc typefaces used for enamel street signs, like shown on this example from basel.
